Carver is a small town south of Boston on the Cape Cod peninsula. It has a population of approximately 9,000 residents. The town was founded in 1639 and its rich history can be seen throughout the downtown area with many original colonial homes still intact. Carver's motto is "A Storied Past, A Bright Future."
People have been living in what is now known as Carver since prehistoric times – they were nomadic Native Americans who hunted game and fished along the shores near where the Mill Pond lies today.
Many artifacts from these native people were found around Main Street back when it was one of Cape Cod's main travel roads (today you might find a few arrowheads along Route 14 from time to time).
In 1639, "Old Yarmouth" as it was known back then, was mostly a farming community. In fact, the first ship built in Massachusetts – The Blessing of the Bay – was constructed here in 1631 by Captain Richard Harlakenden and his brother Francis. The shipyard is located where Mill Pond is today.
That's right – Carver has a great big pond smack dab in the center of town! It wasn't always that way though. 1873 saw a terrible fire that destroyed much of Main Street and nearly all business buildings between Main Street and Pond Street burned down leaving only 2 homes standing.
Reverend William Gookin organized the building of the first meeting house in Old Yarmouth which was located on the site of the Old Meeting House cemetery.
The original building cost 180 pounds to build and it's interesting to note that Gookin advertised for laborers to work on the project in exchange for the free use of one acre of town-owned land.
Carver has a very strong heritage when it comes to education opportunities, with several institutions having called Carver home through history. One such school is now known as Holbrook Junior High School on Route 14.
It began life as an ordinary grammar school back in 1836 before being renamed "The Carver Academy" by Benjamin F. Allen.
He also built the current building around 1860 after an earlier one burned down (despite this, the building does not date back to that original burning of Carver). The Academy was used as a high school for many years but has been used as an intermediate school since the 1950s.
Another former institution of higher learning in Carver is now known as "East Village", and it was once known as High Rock Seminary.
This private coeducational academy opened its doors on October 1, 1843, with 77 students on a roll.
Many were boarders who lived in town and/or attended from surrounding communities such as Pembroke, Duxbury, and Plymouth. It changed names several times over the years until 1894 when it became East Village School for Girls (grades 5-12) under Lucretia Tilton.
The famous Wright Berry Farm. The city of Carver, Massachusetts is home to the famous Wright Berry Farm, which has been in operation for over 150 years. According to oral histories, the farm was originally owned by an Indian named Kitchumson who discovered the land while scouting out his next hunting location.
His tribe at first pleaded with him not to go near it but he went anyway and found that if fed the right things tended to grow there. After planting some seeds from nearby areas they agreed that it must be an enchanted place.
Kitchumson planted various kinds of fruits and vegetables on the land until finally settling on strawberries as they grew successfully no matter what he planted with them (he had tried corn once with poor results).
Knowing that strawberries were the only type of products he could count on for year-round income, Kitchumson traded with other tribes in order to get seeds from his favorite varieties.
He started with ten but ended up planting hundreds of different types in hopes of finding ones that would grow best there.
The land was so abundant and fruitful that eventually others in surrounding areas took notice.
Kitchumson had many friends by this time in various tribes.
They brought their own seeds in hopes of creating their own thriving farms which could provide for them when no hunting or gathering opportunities presented themselves.
Gradually what was once just a small patch became an expansive farm with well-tended rows upon rows of berries which Kitchumson tended to at all hours of the day.
His descendants, who were also given caretaking duties, continued their practice of trading seeds with other tribes. They passed on knowledge to others in the area who wanted to learn about agriculture.
Kitchumson's farm became an example for everyone else to follow; if they could establish a berry farm like his it would be a way for them to have food no matter what hardships came their way.
Eventually, Kitchumson's farm was so renowned that people from across the country would seek out his berries as if they were a rare commodity as opposed to something anyone could grow anywhere as long as they had enough space and sunlight.
After many years of being unable to meet this huge demand, Kitchumson finally decided to plant seeds in the surrounding areas. Within a few years, he had berry farms all around him with his own being dubbed 'The Original Berry Farm'.
Kitchumson's Strawberry Farm is responsible for starting the thriving economy of Carver, Massachusetts.
Their strawberries are known throughout New England for having large size and intense flavor which they credit to their long history in finding the best types of berries for growing in this area.
It has established itself as an agricultural leader by employing methods in crop rotation which can be seen as early precursors to sustainable farming practices in use today.
While the farm is privately owned it welcomes tours from members of the public who wish to learn about the history of the farm and to see how their beloved strawberries are grown.
The Wright Berry Farm has given itself a seat in agricultural history which it continues to hold today with tours, conferences, and demonstrations.
From its humble origins until now it has upheld Kitchumson's legacy while providing other farms in Carver with inspiration to step off the beaten path.
